This course offers an enjoyable journey through the delightful world of wine.
In 3 weekly sessions we will immerse ourselves in the principal grape varieties and wine regions of the world. You will learn about wine components and taste some of the world’s most celebrated varietals. Finally, you will gain the tools to go into any restaurant or wine-bar to enjoy a glass of wine and pair that wine with food.
Along the way, we’ll have lively discussions on what we like, don’t like and why. The course will help you determine which wines suit your palate best. We’ll taste some interesting cheeses, learn a lot and have some fun in the process.
Each session features 7 to 9 wines.
Your teacher will be i.m.Wine’s general manager Ian Mendelsohn.
He started his career as cellar-master/sommelier at Windows of the World under the tutelage of Andrea Immer; M.S. While there he assisted Kevin Zraly with the famed Windows of the World Wine Class. As a wine specialist for Christie’s Auction House, Ian learned from the legends in the wine business including Michael Broadbent, M.W., Christopher Burr, M.W. and Anthony Hanson. He worked with and tasted exceptionally rare wines from some of the most exclusive wine cellars in the world. It was his work at Windows and Christie’s that led him to Southern Wine & Spirits, the nation’s largest wine, beer and spirits distributor located in Las Vegas. He later became the Wine Director of the Mirage Casino and Resort.
Ian will be using Andrea Immer’s famous book, Great Wine Made Simple as your guide.
The first class will be a White Wine Seminar: from light to floral to full. Tastings include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling, and end with that most famous of desert wines, Sauternes.
In the second class we will concentrate on the famous Red Wines of the world. You’ll discover the unique flavors and characteristics of Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet, ending with two fabulous wines from Spain, and maybe a port or two.
The final class will start with a pair of Sparkling Wines, go to the wonderful Rhone Valley, taste an Aussy or two, and then head to Italy to taste their treats from Tuscany and Piedmonte. We’ll end up with Argentina to wash it all down.
