Charbaut Brut, Cuvee Reserve
(Champagne,France)
A relatively modern (1948) Champagne house, Charbaut devotes much of its production to special-label brands for restaurants and distributors. The wines bottled under its own name are a little harder to find but generally offer good value, as in this Brut Cuvee Reserve made from all three Champagne grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Munier.

2004 Chateaux Gaubert Blanc
(Bordeaux, France)
This has a rich, ripe, quite golden color, followed up by an open, expressive nose, packed with aromas of crushed rocks and minerals, with notes of honey and acacia, and then waxy furniture oil. The palate is full of hony-edge white fruits. There is a firm grip and fresh, balanced acidity. A savory finish and a good vibrant length with a touch of grapefruit.

2003 Soave Classico, Pieropan
(Veneto, Italy)
A Soave blend with a high percentage of Trebbiano di Lugana grapes Aromatically pure nose offers minerals, mint, lime and tequila. Complex but subtle on the palate, with hints of apple, peach and almond. This wine generally ages extremely well-easily eight years or more.

2003 Coudoulet de Beaucastel
(Rhone Valley, France)
The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2003 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet rouge (30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, and 20% Syrah) offers sweet scents of licorice, pepper, black currants, and cherry jam. Spicy and medium-bodied, with a touch of dry tannin, it is not as huge a blockbuster as several previous vintages, but is a finely made red that should age nicely for 10-12 years.

2003 Arte, Domenico Clerico
(Piedmonte, Italy)
2003 Langhe ArteDark ruby. This blend of 90% Nebbiolo and 10% Barbera offers a deep nose redolent of spices, minerals and menthol, with very ripe dark red fruit on a structured frame, with plenty of new oak tannins.

2004 Liars Dice Zinfandel

This is a juicy, exuberantly-styled Zin/. A very good value, the 2004 possesses a conservative (for currant day Zinfandels) alcohol percentage of 14.5. Its deep ruby color is followed by big, juicy, extroverted aromas of black cherries, earth, underbrush, pepper, and Provencal spices. It possesses loads of character, a full-bodied palate, terrific fruit purity, and a lovely, savory texture.
