Friday and Saturday, May 25-26, 2007
I know what you are saying, why is i.m.Wine sending me an e-mail about taking time out of my busy Memorial Day week-end plans and tasting Beaujolais. I know you’re telling yourself just send me this e-mail the third Thursday of November so I can purchase my fruity bottles of Nouveau Beaujolais. However, I know you’re also thinking why did the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Stephen Tanzer all take time our of their schedule and lives to talk about the merits and pleasure of the recently released 2005 Cru Beaujolais…THEY ARE GREAT WINES AND AWESOME VALUES!!!!
Let me quote Stephen Tanzer on the 2005’s and then you can let us know this week-end if you agree. “The wines are more structured than one finds from typical vintages…I tasted numerous wines that showed highly appealing freshness, elegance, even weightlessnessqualities most Beaujolais freaks crave. Gamay is by nature a high-acid grape, and in normal or below-average vintages its character can be tangy to the point of tart, but this was seldom the case with the wines I tasted from 2005. The best of these wines have it all: the bright, zesty qualities that characterize textbook Beaujolais, the depth and concentration of an exceptional vintage, and the power and structure to improve with up to a decade of cellaring…“
In addition to tasting some great Beaujolais this week-end, our friend Michael Adelsheim from the famed Willamette Valley in Oregon stopped by to taste his exceptional range of wines this week. Please join us to taste the Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir Rose; we only have a few bottles left of his great 2005, and the freshness of the 2006 Pinot Gris is exceptional.
2005 Adelsheim Pinot Gris (US, Oregon, Willamette Valley)
Original Price $19.99 Special Price $17.99
Crisp bright flavors have always been the hallmark of this wine. Flavors of pear, white peach and apples combine with a gentle creaminess and mouth filling texture on the palate.
2006 Adelsheim Rosé (US, Oregon, Willamette Valley)
Original Price $19.99 Special Price $17.99
This is the winery’s first Rosé to be released to the public. Made from Pinot Noir, the winemaker set out to make a wine that was neither white (crisp, clean and refreshing) nor red (round, full and savory) but a wine that had elements of both! It is rich with cherry, strawberry and rhubarb fruits finishing clean and crisp.
2005 Beaujolais Cuvee Traditionelle VV, Dom Vissoux (France, Burgundy)
Original Price $16.99 Special Price $15.29
Vibrant, spice-accented raspberry and cherry preserve aromas complicated by a musky array of spice and underbrush accents. Lush and creamy, with just enough acid lift to give energy and focus to its sweet red berry and cherry flavors. Finishes sweet and long, with a lingering raspberry note.
2005 Fleurie, Poncie, Domaine Vissoux (France, Burgundy)
Original Price $20.99 Special Price $18.89
Intensely spicy, focused aromas of raspberry and wild strawberry are subtly accented by zesty minerality. The lush red and dark berry flavors are supported by gentle acidity and fine-grained tannins. Boasts building sweetness on the finish, with a sexy spice note emerging with aeration to contribute freshness to the bright berry flavors.
2005 Julienas, Domaine Pascal Granger (France, Burgundy)
Original Price $16.99 Special Price $15.29
Ripe, precise raspberry and blackberry scents are suavely accented by violet and white pepper. Then lush and weighty on the palate, with ripe dark berry compote flavors, soft tannins and gentle acid lift on the long, juicy finish. A distinctly ripe, fleshy wine, with the concentration to pair with heartier fare.
2005 Morgon Vieilles Vignes, Daniel Bouland (France, Burgundy)
Original Price $19.99 Special Price $17.99
Sweet blackberry and candied plum aromas along with gentle spice and mineral accents. Fleshy and open-knit, with dark berry and cherry flavors showing very good depth and a lush, almost creamy finish. This is delicious right now.
