Easter Tasting Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, 2007
Gruet Blanc de Noir NV (USA, New Mexico)
Standard Price $15.99 Sale $14.39
The rich and toasty character of this Blanc de Noirs is balanced and superb. Aged for two-year minimum, the palate is developed and shows rich complex flavors. The amazing berry aromas and the creamy texture play a leading role and create a great finesse. With an aggressive mousse and lovely fruit this wine offers plenty of immediate charm and toasty aromas.
2005 Francis Ford Coppola "Directors Cut" Chardonnay (USA, Russian River Valley)
Standard Price $17.99 Sale $16.19
This wine comes from the Russian River Valley, a sub-region of Sonoma that's famous for producing crisp, zippy whites. Thanks to a big dose of barrel fermentation (oak, that is) and something called malolactic fermentation (that's where all those creamy, buttery flavors in chardonnay traditionally come from), the Director's Cut chardonnay is simultaneously bright and clear with a great viscous texture. It is beautifully balanced between citrus and buttery oak, and very impressive. If, like so many wine lovers, you think you're "over" chardonnay, try this one and you'll remember why you fell in love with the grape in the first place.
2005 Qupe "Bien Nacido Cuvee" (USA, Santa Maria Valley)
Standard Price $21.99 Sale $19.79
This wine is 50% Chardonnay and 50% Viognier. The Viognier is picked ultra-ripe which on its own would be too heavy and cloying but blended with Chardonnay the aromatics are amazing. Both the nose and the palate exhibit floral, honeysuckle and orange zest possessing a fruit forward expression with lively acidity
2005 Vouvray, Domaine Pichot (France, Loire Valley)
Standard Price $13.99 Sale $12.59
Low yields, hand harvesting and barrel fermentation are employed to give the wine its authenticity. They call it "slightly dry" in France meaning there is a hint of subtle sweetness. The aromas are honeydew, peach and a hint of spice. The palate is juicy and fresh, and the acidity balances the slight residual sugar in the finish.
2003 Beaujolais-Villages "Old Vine", Mommessin (France, Burgundy)
Standard Price $12.99 Sale $11.69
Vines that are 40 to 80 years old are selected from the best plots for this cuvée. The older the vine, the richer the wine and this wine is a rich example of such. Deep, ruby in color with a well-developed bouquet of violets and red fruits; the palate offers ripe and dense flavors of strawberry and raspberry. This wine is balanced and elegant.
2001 Belle-Vue (France, Bordeaux)
Standard Price $22.99 Sale $20.69
This is a concentrated blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 20% Petit Verdot from old vines in deep, gravelly soils that offer terrific complexity on both the nose and the palate. Notes of plums, black currants, smoke, licorice and menthol; the wine is medium-bodied, with sweet tannin and a long, concentrated finish.
2004 Pellegrini "Cloverdale Ranch" Cabernet Sauvignon (USA, Napa Valley)
Standard Price $27.99 Sale $25.19
2004 was a warm growing season that culminated in an early harvest. Moderate yields resulted in fully developed flavors and balanced maturity. The wine shows exceptional color, depth and aromatics of chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla and black cherry. With lots of toasted oak and cardamom spice, this wine offers a structured mouth-feel, good balanced acidity, and a long finish.
2004 Mas du Daumas Gassac Red (France, Languedoc)
Standard Price $40.99 Sale $36.89
This wine has been hailed “The Grand Cru of the Languedoc” by some notable wine critics. The first wines ever to be produced in the Gassac Valley are said to date back to 780 AD when one of Charlemagne’s counselors created the first vineyard in this magical valley. Made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Tannat, Nebiolo, Dolcetto…which will remind one of the great wines of the Medoc in Bordeaux when young and as it ages becomes reminiscent of the undergrowth and truffles found in vintage Burgundies!
