Wine Tastings Saturday, March 17, 2007
2002 Pouilly-Fume, de Ladoucette, Chateau de Nozet (France, Loire Valley)
Pale golden-green color with considerable intensity on the nose; this wine has an exceptional full range of floral, exotic and citrus fruit aromas. These notes are enhanced and strengthened by the mineral note of gunflint. The flavor is pleasant and lively, tempered by a fruity roundness with notes of pear, green apples and citrus fruits. The finish offers a pleasant lemony freshness.
2005 Roter Veltliner, Wimmer Czerny (Austria, Wagram)
Roter Veltliner, a darker skinned mutation of our favorite Austrian grape varietal, the Gruner Veltliner.; this wine is pale lemon green in color with aromas of green apples, mango and honey round out the steely nose. The palate offers a slightly piquant attack with white pepper, tobacco, mineral, and spice flavors abound.
2003 Sauvignon, Movia (Slovenia, Brda)
This wine estate has been in existence since 1700 on a prime strip of land that adjoins Italy with Slovenia. Light gold in the glass, this wine has a comforting nose of floral and mineral aromas mixed with the scent of warm toasted brioche. On the palate it has a very mineral character, with nice acidity and a silky texture. This is a refreshing, unique wine that doesn't quite taste like anything else, but is deliciously drinkable in its eccentricity.
2004 Springfield Estate Wild Yeast Chardonnay (South Africa, Robertson)
This Chardonnay, fermented with natural yeast present on the grapes, abounds with flavors of pineapple and pear. Deliciously complex in style, this wine re-defines 'satiny smooth' as the ripe tropical flavors simply fold into the mouth with stunning concentration and a lovely finish.
2005 Valpolicella Classico, Tommaso Bussola (Italy, Veneto)
Ruby red in color, this Valpolicella Classico has a delicate and distinctive fruity bouquet. On the palate it is dry with a pleasant bitterness, soft, velvety and harmonious flavor. Excellent with hors d'oeuvres, pasta dishes, red and white meats.
2004 Brampton Shiraz (South Africa, Stellenbosch)
The rich savory character of Shiraz is enhanced by Viognier, adding an aromatic expression to the wine. A Mourvedre component adds an amount of spice and wild berry to the blend. Deep plum in color, the aroma of this wine offers sweet fruits with a meaty, spicy character with a palate that is earthy and peppery with a hint of dark chocolate that supports the richness of the dark fruit.
2004 Wildekrans Cabernet Franc Merlot (South Africa, Walker Bay)
This wine has been matured in French Oak barrels for 9 months. It is deep ruby red in color with zesty aromas of ripe raspberries and strawberries, which continue onto the palate. Excellent, well structured, fruit balanced tannins give the wine a long, lingering finish.
2004 Cotes du Rhone, “Les Deux Albion”, Saint Cosme (France, Rhone Valley)
This is a well blended, full-bodied red wine with a polish and sophistication that goes above and beyond intrinsic expectation. Luxurious layers of vibrant blackberry flavors are accented by heavy spice and soft tannins.
